Les Romains, par exemple, ont construit un empire immense. Tout le monde connaît leur génie pour l'architecture et l'ingénierie, mais on parle moins de leur sens de l’organisation sociale. J’ai toujours été frappé par l'efficacité de leur administration, capable de maintenir un empire aussi vaste. Vous imaginez ? Une simple missive pouvait mettre des semaines à traverser l'Empire, mais malgré cela, la Pax Romana régnait. Et pourtant, malgré cette apparente rigidité bureaucratique, il y avait une place pour l'art, la philosophie et même le divertissement. Il suffit de penser aux combats de gladiateurs dans le Colisée pour voir que, sous leur discipline de fer, les Romains avaient aussi une passion dévorante pour le spectacle. Ironique, non ? Un peuple si pragmatique qui se délectait de distractions sanglantes.
Les Grecs, eux, sont les grands rêveurs de l'Antiquité. Si les Romains bâtissaient des routes, les Grecs construisaient des pensées. Leur quête de savoir était sans bornes, de la philosophie aux sciences, en passant par la politique. Ce que j’admire le plus chez eux, c’est cette capacité à s’interroger sur tout. Qui sommes-nous ? D’où venons-nous ? Où allons-nous ? On imagine Socrate, déambulant dans les rues d’Athènes, questionnant chaque passant, cherchant la vérité dans chaque recoin. Je trouve leur soif d’apprentissage presque intemporelle. Et puis, il y a l’art grec, si parfait qu’il a influencé toute l’histoire occidentale. Qui n’a jamais été ému devant une statue grecque, ces corps idéalisés, presque trop parfaits pour être humains ?
Les Égyptiens, quant à eux, sont souvent perçus comme les mystiques de l’Antiquité. Quand on pense à eux, on imagine immédiatement les pyramides, ces constructions colossales qui défient encore l’entendement. Comment ont-ils fait pour ériger de tels monuments avec les moyens de l'époque ? Le mystère demeure. Personnellement, ce qui me fascine le plus, c'est leur relation au temps et à la mort. Ils voyaient la vie terrestre comme une préparation minutieuse à l'au-delà. Les rites funéraires étaient d'une complexité incroyable, et pour cause : ils croyaient que leur âme devait survivre pour l’éternité. Ce souci du détail, dans l’au-delà comme dans la vie quotidienne, en dit long sur leur vision de l’univers.
Plus anciens encore, les Sumériens, dont la civilisation a émergé dans la Mésopotamie, sont souvent moins connus du grand public. Pourtant, c’est à eux que l’on doit l’invention de l’écriture ! Je me souviens avoir lu quelque part que la première utilisation de cette écriture n’était pas pour consigner des poèmes ou des récits épiques, mais pour des registres commerciaux. Cela me fait sourire : avant de chanter les héros, l’être humain a d'abord voulu s'assurer que les échanges étaient bien comptabilisés. Leur système social, tout comme celui des Égyptiens, était aussi fortement lié à la religion. Leurs temples, les ziggourats, s'élevaient vers les cieux comme des ponts entre le monde des hommes et celui des dieux.
Enfin, il y a les Celtes, ce peuple énigmatique que l'on imagine souvent vêtu de peaux de bêtes, parcourant les forêts sombres d’Europe de l’Ouest. Mais leur culture est bien plus riche que ces clichés. Ce qui me fascine chez les Celtes, c'est leur lien profond avec la nature. Ils voyaient le divin partout : dans les rivières, les arbres, les collines. Cette communion avec la terre a quelque chose de très moderne, presque écologique. On dit souvent que leurs druides étaient à la fois prêtres, médecins et philosophes. Imaginez un peu, une société où ceux qui soignent sont aussi ceux qui réfléchissent au sens de l’existence. C'est un mélange fascinant que je trouve incroyablement poétique.
Ainsi, qu'il s'agisse de l'ingéniosité romaine, de la sagesse grecque, du mysticisme égyptien, du pragmatisme sumérien ou de la spiritualité celtique, toutes ces civilisations nous rappellent combien l’humanité est riche de diversité. Chacune à sa manière a contribué à forger le monde dans lequel nous vivons aujourd'hui. Je trouve cela réconfortant de penser que, malgré les siècles qui nous séparent, nous continuons de marcher sur les traces de ces géants du passé.
